Wireless Access Explained

To start using the service:

1. Select the WLAN-network-ID (ESS-Id) setting and enter rasenet as the name of the network. WLAN settings can be found by clicking the icon located in the lower right hand of the display or may be found in the control panel.
2. Under the WLAN encryption setting, uncheck traffic encryption if it is checked.
3. Check that your laptop or PDA can connect to the WLAN network.
4. Start your Internet browser; you will be automatically redirected to a web page which provides limited free access to local information. If you already have an active account, you can enter your login name and password and click Submit. Alternatively, click on ‘Buy your access online’ to be taken to the screen which prompts you to select your usage option and enter your payment details. Each time you purchase another period of access, you will need to supply a new username and password.

In your browser settings uncheck the server proxy setting if it is checked. Should you require assistance please contact the event manager.

Depending on your company’s IT policy, you may need assistance from your IT department to be able to use this service. By using this subscription you agree to observe the terms and conditions of Stoneleigh Park Lodge’s wireless service, which are available here.

1 Hour (Purchase Online or Voucher)
This option gives you 1 hour’s data transfer within a 12 hour period. If the system detects a period of 5 minutes inactivity, it will drop the routing details and log you out. Logging in again will credit you back the 5 minutes inactivity, and you will have the remainder of the hour.

2 Hours (Purchase Online)
This option gives you 2 hour’s data transfer within a 12 hour period. If the system detects a period of 5 minutes inactivity, it will drop the routing details and log you out. Logging in again will credit you back the 5 minutes inactivity, and you will have the remainder of the hour.

1 Day (Purchase Online or Voucher)
This option gives you 24 hours continuous access. There is no inactivity timeout, so the 12 hours starts from the moment you connect.
NOTE: You MUST manually force a logout (as below) if you want to stop the clock counting. E.g. If you connect at 3:00pm and want to disconnect at 5:00pm and then resume at 9:00am the following day, you must manually logout at 5:00pm)

1 Month (Purchase Online)
This option gives you 120 hours access within a one month period. There is no inactivity timeout, so the 12 hours starts from the moment you connect.
NOTE: You MUST manually force a logout (as below) if you want to stop the clock counting. E.g. If you connect at 3:00pm and want to disconnect at 5:00pm and then resume at 9:00am the following day, you must manually logout at 5:00pm)

To manually force a logout, enter 1.1.1.1 in your browsers address field.

Technical stuff
Our Wireless network uses an uncontended 10Mb feed. Obviously, the more people that connect to the wireless network the less of that 10Mb bandwidth will be available to each user, however, as the demand per PC is spread over time, the effect is negligible.

Each of the eleven access points are 802.11a/b/g compliant and support both multiple VPN’s per access point and VOiP (Voice over IP) services.

When your computer accesses our Wireless Access Points, the system identifies the machine by it’s MAC address. The internet frame sent from your machine is then intercepted and the system acts in a ‘chameleon’ fashion to become the default gateway for that computer, regardless of the computers settings.

The system will issue an IP within the range used by the computers own network if required, or one within the system range if the computer is set for DHCP and doesn’t have a network set up.

PLEASE NOTE: If you have a proxy server set up, you MUST disable that to get access to our wireless network. Please make a note of the settings before you disable it so that you can re-instate it when you leave our network.

Once the system has set itself up as the default gateway for your computer, you will be taken to our login page. Once you enter a valid username and password, the system will authenticate that, and then store those details in it’s ARP table so that all future internet packets are routed directly out onto the internet.

We do not provide virus scanning or firewall facilities. Neither is the connection from your computer to the Wireless Access Point encrypted. If you are transmitting sensitive data, the use of VPN’s are recommended.
